Analysis of the online presentation of Czech literary canon museums and expositions
Garbová, Denisa ; Vachková, Iva (advisor) ; Činátlová, Blanka (referee)
This thesis deals with the presentation of the literary canon on the websites of literary museums. First of all, it was necessary to determine the canon of authors for this thesis -as a method we chose to analyse school reading lists for the Czech language and literature graduation exam from Prague public gymnasiums. We then investigated whether there is a museum dedicated to the author in question and, if so, whether this museum has its own website. In this way, we identified 16 literary museums for subsequent analysis. The websites were analyzed according to four criteria: website layout, communication with the visitor, visual style and educational programs, and educational potential. This last criterion was crucial for the next part of the research in this thesis. It was followed by two questionnaire surveys, one with respondents from among teachers of Czech language and literature in Prague gymnasiums, the other with respondents from among representatives of literary museums. Seven museums and seven teachers were involved in this part of the research. The questionnaire for museums complemented the findings from the previous analysis of museum websites and showed that school groups are an important visitor group for museums. The aim of the questionnaire survey with teachers as respondents was to...
The question of reader´s canon and forms of reception in literary education at the 2nd stage of primary schools ( with a focus on creating K. H. Mácha and B. Němcová)
SEDMÍKOVÁ, Kristýna
The work will focus on the issue of the Czech literary canon and the literary legacy as a national wealth, while the work will focus especially the reception of this legacy in pupils at the elementary school. For this purpose, two authors were chosen - Karel Hynek Mácha and Božena Němcová. They are canonical authors their works were in many ways pioneering and determined for the subsequent development of Czech literature. The thesis is asking the extent to which importance is attached to these writers in the eyes of elementary school pupils. The work highlights the different perceptions of key authors in the past and in today's context. The work will also try to find out what didactic procedures and strategies are chosen by teachers in the teaching of chosen authors. Another objective of the thesis is to find out whether teachers use their own innovative methods in teaching about the mentioned authors, or compare the applied forms with other possible procedures, which could contribute by their attractive nature to the positive acceptance of students and also to the subsequent deepening of the understanding of the given issue.
Canon of Anglophone Literatures in the Czech Context
Onufer, Petr ; Procházka, Martin (advisor) ; Hilský, Martin (referee) ; Nagy, Ladislav (referee)
English Summary The present thesis deals with the various ways in which Anglophone literatures form their canon(s) in the Czech context. In doing so, it treats literature as one inseparable whole, consisting of poetry, prose and literary criticism. The latter is not understood as auxiliary literature, but rather as a self-sufficient form that deserves equal attention to so-called "creative writing"; after all, all the three major literary forms inevitably participate in canon formation, albeit in their own respective ways. The process of canon formation takes different turns and yields different results in the original, i.e. Anglophone, milieu and in the Czech context - and the canons that thus arise differ as well. Moreover, the debate on canons is always being complicated by their essentially unstable, variable nature; by definition, the process of canon formation is unfinished and interminable. Canons are not to be viewed as the be-all and end-all of literary analysis but rather as guideposts, useful tools that stimulate further study and permanently invite questioning and revisions of themselves. In spite of this fundamental - and quite simple - purpose, the literary canon is an extremely complex and intricate concept. The complexity of its meanings and its implications is dealt with in the thesis'...
Literary analysis of M. Viewegh's writing: A Novel For Women and Novel For Men from a gender perspective
Lavičková, Tereza ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kalnická, Zdeňka (referee)
This master thesis deals with feminist literary analysis of the works of writer Michal Viewegh, specifically his two prose novels Román pro ženy and Román pro muže using a method called resistant reading with a critical gender analysis and subsequent final comparison. This thesis consists of two parts, from the theoretical - methodological, which outlines the theoretical basis for the next analytical part. The key concepts are in the first part the researches of literary critics on Michal Viewegh, theories of Judith Fetterley, Elaine Showalter and Janice A. Radway. Furthermore, there are the theoretical basis of gender, and how gender stereotypes are constructed. This section is mainly based on the theorists Blanka Knotková - Čapková, Annis Pratt, Claire M. Renzetti and Daniel J. Curran and founder of analytical psychology Carl Gustav Jung. In describing femininity and masculinity are central lines theories of Naomi Wolf, Simone de Beauvoir and Pierre Bourdieu, Michael Kimmel and Robert Bly. The analytical part is the critical uncovering of gender stereotypes and power discourse. The conclusion is made by the final critical comparison of both novels. Key words: resistant reading, literary canon, gender stereotypes, masculinity, femininity, beauty myth, male domination, power
Fate women in fiction of Ladislav Klíma. Gender archetypes in writings Sufferings of Prince Sternenhoch and Glorious Nemesis
Veselá, Blanka ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kalivodová, Eva (referee)
This thesis is a literary analysis that discusses gender archetypes within two extensive literary works of Ladislav Klíma which he adapted into final pieces: Sufferings of Prince Sternenhoch and Glorious Nemesis. The methodological and theoretical part of the work examines the question of literary canon, defends feminist criticism as a legitimate approach to text analysis, looks back at the relatively short history of the use of gender as an analytical category, and represents a method of resistant reading. It also reflects the inspirational source of Klíma's authorship, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche with an emphasis on gender aspects. Using classical feminist texts, works of literary theory, and the works that are central (not exclusively to feminist) analysis of (not only literary) archetypes identifies (mostly) female literary characters with some of the traditional (but also less common) archetypes - mother, witch, goddess of justice and fate, collaborator, and others. Except for archetypes, the thesis also discusses other gender (literary) aspects, for example the issue of stereotypical display of femininity and masculinity, the conceptualization of women as a capital, and women's connection with nature or female sexuality which is still often analyzed on the basis of the...
Meze a jazyky v poezii současných irských autorek
Theinová, Daniela ; Quinn, Justin (advisor) ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee) ; Campbell, Matthew (referee)
Filozofická fakulta Univerzity Karlovy v Praze DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Daniela Theinová LIMITS AND LANGUAGES in Contemporary Irish Women's Poetry "Irish poetry" is an inherently equivocal concept characterized by two fissures, one linguistic (Irish-English; standard English-Hiberno English) and the other chronological (oral-written; Old Irish-modern Irish). Central to my project is to show how this bifurcate cultural identity, prominent in Irish literature due to Ireland's history and the politicized concept of "national language," figures in poetry by Irish women of the last forty years. While I account for the significance of the hyphen in Anglo-Irish as well as in Gaelic-Irish poets, contradictory tensions are traced not only across and along the linguistic divide. In attending to the shift from feminism (Eavan Boland, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Paula Meehan, Medbh McGuckian, and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill) to post-feminism in Irish poetry (Biddy Jenkinson, Vona Groarke, Caitríona O'Reilly, and Aifric Mac Aodha), I illustrate the role that the border between English and Irish has played in these processes. The dissertation falls into two parts each of which consists of two chapters. Part One explores some of the ways in which poets have confronted the inherited tradition and the feminine stereotypes therein. My...
